Step 1

Partnering with Durrell's Rewild Carbon programme

While we explore next-generation technologies, we're partnering with Durrell's Rewild Carbon programme to balance our emissions from every flight

Universal Hydrogen and Blue Islands planes

Step 2

Next Generation Technology

We're proud to be partnering with Universal Hydrogen, its groundbreaking test flight of a hydrogen powered regional aircraft is a major milestone in this journey. In January 2023, we visited Toulouse with Ports of Jersey, Government of Jersey and other stakeholders to learn more about the progress Universal Hydrogen is making with its model for hydrogen-fuelled aircraft.

Our journey to net zero

Step 3

Net Zero

Connecting people is an essential part of island life; and we have a responsibility to do it sustainably. We’re committed to sustainably connecting our islands, and reducing our impacts through next-generation technologies is our future.

For the longer term, net zero is our ultimate goal.

Your questions answered

As we embark on this vital first interim step of our plan for change, we will balance the carbon emissions from every Blue Islands flight through our partnership with Durrell’s Rewild Carbon programme which reduces carbon in the atmosphere by rewilding threatened ecosystems which are rich in wildlife.

The Rewild Carbon programme simultaneously addresses climate change, supports local communties and conserves biodiversity with four central pillars: Revive ecosystems; Recover species; Reduce carbon; Rebuild livelihoods.

90% of all money received by Durrell's accountable, transparent and scientific Rewild Carbon programme goes straight to nature.

Plus, naturally, as a Channel Islands airline, we’re delighted to be partnering with an organisation that is synonymous with Jersey.

For more information, please see https://www.durrell.org/get-involved/rewild-carbon/

When flying with Blue Islands, the carbon emissions of your flight will be balanced through our support for Durrell’s Rewild Carbon programme. Our £1 contribution per customer is calculated to balance the emissions for all flights on all routes across our network.

We know that whether for our social wellbeing or economic prosperity, sustainable air services are an essential part of island life. We recognise that this necessity comes at a cost to our planet, for which we all need to take collective responsibility and that the only way to make a difference is for everyone to work together.

The £1 contribution will be included within the headline price you see whether searching for flights on the Blue Islands website or through other booking channels.

If you see a price of £49 for your flight, you’ll pay £49 – which will be £48 for your fare and airport/government taxes and £1 to carbon balance your flight. You’ll see this in the itemised basket when you book on the website.

Blue Islands’ fleet comprises entirely of ATR aircraft, which is the most environmentally efficient turboprop in its class. Turboprop aircraft are optimised for short, regional flights at relatively low altitudes, versus jet aircraft which are more efficient on longer flights at higher altitudes.

We also:

  • Optimise schedules to maximise passenger carryings
  • Plan smart routings
  • Taxi on one engine
  • Minimise power usage on stand
  • Work with ground handling partners to employ electric vehicles where possible
  • An on-board service that reduces the impact on the environment

Blue Islands is working with Univeral Hydrogen, a company that is developing the conversion of existing aircraft to zero-carbon hydrogen fuel. By its nature, the technology is in development, although there is an aim to develop and certify a hydrogen-powered ATR aircraft for commercial flight by 2025.

No, your carbon offset contribution to balance the carbon emission of your flight is automatically included in the fare..

Loganair's GreenSkies programme offsets the carbon emissions for its flights. However, if connecting with another airline, please check with the individual airline for its carbon policy.

Yes, we balance the carbon emissions for the flight.
